Lauren, a 2nd Year at Oakwood Court College was crowned the Young Sports Personality of the Year at the Express and Echo Sports Awards 2014. This is despite the fact she only took up badminton a year before.

However Lauren found that she has something of a natural talent for the sport. She entered her first tournament in March, where she lost only one game and finished as the highest ranked female at the Championships.

In September Lauren then took part in the Four Nations Para Badminton Championships in Cardiff, where she represented England and Devon. Lauren picked up three Gold medals in the tournament and beat the reigning ladies champion in the singles final.

Two months later, Lauren represented Exeter in the Special Olympics Badminton Championships in Bournemouth where she won a Silver medal. Lauren said:

“Getting nominated sports person of the year was a big shock to me. But I wouldn’t have even been nominated if it wasn’t for Rob (Oakwood Court Physical Wellbeing Tutor) because he took us to Special Olympics and me and Rob just started to play badminton and Paul my coach came to me and Rob and asked me did I want to join the special Olympics badminton team.“
